How to Fix the Rogue Mouse Issue

Sometimes the most trivial issues can become exhausting problems. The mouse and keyboard are often the unsung heroes of our computers and laptops. If you do not believe this, try working without one or the other for a day, or even an hour! These devices can wear out over time and it is normal to replace the batteries for wireless versions of these peripherals when they stop working. Sometimes though, they seem to be functioning but are providing unexpected results.

When a mouse behaves erratically, accomplishing normal tasks can be nearly impossible. Luckily, there is a way to fix the rogue mouse issue.

How to Fix the Rogue Mouse Issue

Before explaining how to fix a rouge mouse issue, it is important to mention that the following items can also cause a mouse to respond in erratic and unexpected ways, similar to the following issue:
  • A dying battery in the case of wireless mice
  • A device suffering from performance issues due to high demands on available resources
  • A USB port that is going bad

After verifying none of the above issues are causing the problematic mouse behavior, try applying the fix below.
  • Open Control Panel and double-click "Mouse".
  • In the Mouse Properties box, click on the "Pointer Options" tab.

  • Under the Motion heading, un-check the box next to "Enhance pointer precision".

  • Click "Apply", and "Ok" to save the settings and close this box.
Using a mouse that is behaving unpredictably can be frustrating and will definitely waste time. If you have already checked to make sure it is not a battery issue, a USB port issue, or a device performance issue, check the mouse properties to verify the enhanced pointer precision setting is disabled. This should fix any issues with the mouse jumping around the screen and behaving in a manner inconsistent with the movements being made with the mouse.

As always, configurations can have unanticipated effects. These may or may not be to our advantage which is why it is so important to know how to change them!
